Bellsouth will not allow you send outgoing SMTP email through thier servers for security reasons.  However, Sprint provides an outgoing SMTP server that will preserve the email format and retain the From: (your) email address.  It's a little tricky to set up though.

These instructions were designed with the Samsung Instinct in mind but, technically, they can be followed for any phone that supports Sprint Mobile Email.  In addition, if you know the Incoming Mail Server for your email ISP, you should be able to use these instuctions for Cox, TWC, Comcast, Bright House, and Juno.

If you have already configured as POP3 on your phone for the account in question (unsuccessfully), you will need to delete it and add a new one.

  1. Press Home and touch Main and then Email.
  2. Press Back to return to the Email Home Page.
  3. Touch Add New Email Account to begin the process of adding a new email account.
  4. Scroll down to More and select it.
  5. Select Other POP
  6. Enter the email address for your Bellsouth email account the password used to access it
  7. Select Next
  8. For Incoming Mail Server enter mail.bellsouth.net
  9. Leave SSL off.
  10. Enter the username for the email account (usually the portion before @ in the email address)
  11. For Outgoing Mail Server enter smtp.sprintpcs.com
  12. Leave SSL and SMTP Auth off
  13. Select Next
  14. Give the Email Account a recognizable name.
  15. Select Next.
  16. Select Next to sign in and test the account.
  17. If you are successful it should then pop into the Inbox of the email account.

Congradulations!!!
